Class 6A State Championship Game - Simon Kenton vs. Louisville Trinity

The storied season for the Simon Kenton Pioneers came to an end on Saturday night before a crowd of 11,556. It wasn't the end that the Pioneers were looking for as they fell to the Louisville Trinity Shamrocks by a 48-0 final. The key to the game for the pioneers was to score early and often. They were not able to do that against the Shamrock defense which held the Pioneers to just 150 yards of total offense. 72 of those yards came on the ground by Miles Simpson. The Pioneers also suffered a blow in the second quarter when Sophomore QB Chad Lawrence suffered a blow to the helmet and was taken out of the game on a stretcher. He would be taken to the University of Louisville Hospital for observation, but reported to be o.k. The Pioneers season ends with a 10-5 record. Not bad for a team that at this point in December is usually working on Winter conditioning instead of playing in the State Championship game.

On a personal note here: Seeing the boys after the game, you couldn't tell which team had won the game. Pioneers players jumping in the stands, the high chest bumps, the fans wouldn't leave. These boys although came home with the runner-up trophy will take these memories back to Independence and I'm sure will work that much harder to get right back to the state game next year.

For the fans of the Pioneers: We saw your signs on the way to Louisville. You traveled extremely well. I don't know if many folks from Independence were left at home. We know you are proud of the Pioneers. They'll be back.

The game audio is available on the player to the right. Enjoy!!!!

Playoff Week 4 - Crittenden County @ Beechwood

Cold wasn't even the word for the State Class A semi-final game between the Crittenden County Rockets and the Beechwood Tigers. Bitter is more like it. Crittenden County made a 4 1/2 hour drive north from Western kentucky for the game with the winner going on to the State Finals next Friday morning at 11:00am at Papa John Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. Crittenden County traveled well as far as their fans go, but could not find an answer for the Tigers Offense, especially Nieco Teipel. The scoring got underway at the 7:24 mark in the first quarter when Matt Rigdon ran for a 10 yard TD. After that, it was all Nieco Teipel. 4 touchdown runs of 8, 25, 37 and 4 yards put the icing on the cake as Beechwood would hold the Rockets scoreless taking a 34-0 win and advancing to the state finals. Teipel needed just 9 yards at the start of the game to reach the 2,000 yard mark and ended with 185 in the game making a total of 2,176. His 4 touchdowns added to his total before the game of 31 for a total of 35 going into Friday's game. Rockets QB, JD Gray went down with a knee injury in the second quarter with a knee injury and did not return. Coach Starnes said after the game that it just popped out of place and that Gray would be fine.

Beechwood moves to 13-1 and will take on the Hazard Bulldogs (11-3) who are making their first ever trip to the State finals after beating last years opponent for Beechwood, Lexington Christian 28-21.

Playoff Week 2 - Simon Kenton @ Conner

Another cold night for playoff football, but we made our way out to Conner for a repeat matchup from week 3 of the regular season. A game that saw Simon Kenton take a 19-7 lead into the final 3 minutes just to have Conner come back and take a 20-19 win. Plenty of media on hand for this one with two radio stations, TV and the paper too. The first quarter saw both teams get on the board and both miss the extra point. tied at 6 going into the second quarter. Miles Simpson would be the key in this game. He had a school record 6 touchdowns while rushing for 287 yards on 41 carries. Not to be overlooked, Nick West for Conner had a great game as well. He finished the game going 24 for 36 for a total of 380 yards and 5 TD's. The most encouraging thing about these two players, they are both juniors and will be back next year for their senior season. As the Coach and I said during the game, both young men are legit Mr. Football Candidates for next year. We WILL broadcast that game when it happens next year.

Conner ends their season at 7-5 while Simon Kenton goes to 8-4 and will play Boone County as one of the final 8 teams in Class 6A. We wish all of our teams the best of luck as the playoffs start their final run in the next couple of weeks.

Playoff Week 1 - Carroll County @ Holy Cross

Our first playoff game was a wet one to be sure. Cold and wet. But regardless, Carroll County came north for the second week in a row in a Class 2A Playoff setting as they took on the Holy Cross Indians in the first round of the playoffs. Things started off badly for Carroll County when Holy Cross ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown, however that was called back due to a Holy Cross penalty. Holy Cross would see the endzone quite a few times as the Indians were up 21-0 after the first quarter. Carroll County finally cracked the scoreboard on a field goal in the 4th quarter, but it would not be enough as the Indians running game put a total of 56 points on the board. 56-3 the final at Tom Ellis Field.

Carroll County goes to 5-6 on the season while Holy Cross goes to 4-7 and will face Louisville DeSales on the road on Friday. Holy Cross has won on the road this year, so we wish them the best in week 2.

Game 11 - Beechwood @ Newport Central Catholic

Our final regular season contest put two of the best in northern kentucky together as Beechwood traveled to Newport Central Catholic on the Thoroughbreds Senior Night. A defensive struggle in the first quarter only saw scoring on a 25 yard field goal by Chris Grosser as NCC scored first and led 3-0 after the first 12 minutes. Both teams got in the endzone in the second quarter. Ben Parr for NCC scored on a 65 yard run to go up 10-0 but Matt rigdon ran for 24 yards with 2:53 to go in the half. A blocked extra point made the halftime score 10-6. A 83 yard punt return for Mark Kelly and a 44 yard fumble recovery for a score by Jake Smith put the 'breds up 24-6, but Beechwood wasn't done. A 13 yard run by Joe Daniels made it a 24-13 score going into the 4th quarter. Mark Kelly scored again from 4 yards out making the score 31-13, but a Nieco Teipel 16 yard run closed out the scoring for both teams as the game closed on 2 key interceptions by NCC in the last 5 minutes. 31-20 your final.

Game 10 - Gallatin County @ Bellevue

Our first afternoon game did not disappoint as we saw a preview of the Class A playoffs between the Gallatin County Wildcats and the Bellevue Tigers. Gallatin County came in with just 21 players on the roster, but they made up what they lacked in numbers with defense, holding Bellevue scoreless twice in the first half when the tigers had the ball inside the Wildcats 5 yard line. Gallatin County would get on the board first but on the next play, Bellevue ran the ball 95 yards to tie the game. The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead in the 4th quarter, but backup QB, Bryce Carlton threw an interception with the Wildcats 10 yards away from the game leading score. Bellevue would add another score with time running out to seal the game although Gallatin County scored as the clock hit 0:00. 20-13 was the final, Bellevue.

Game 9 - Ryle @ Boone County

The afternoon rain made the boone county field very muddy, but it did not deter the Rebels as they won the district 6-6 Championship with a 28-14 win over the neighboring Ryle Raiders. Charles Quainoo had 53 carries for 307 yards with 3 touchdown runs of 2, 84 and 7 yards in the total. Zac Eagler added a 25 yard running score to cap off the 28 points for the rebels. Ryle had the only third quarter scoring on a 37 yard catch by Cody Ferguson and added a Steve Helmer 69 yard pass in the final quarter to bring the Raider total to 14 points. in the rebel win.

Game 8 - Ludlow @ Grant County

The weather has definately turned to Football weather as we broguht you the Ludlow Panthers traveling South to face the Grant County Braves. QB Joe Soden got the Braves scoring underway on the 2nd play from scrimage with an 18 yard TD. The Panthers would remain scoreless after the first quarter with the braves jumping out to a 28-0 lead after the first 12 minutes. It would be 35-8 at the half and a 55-14 final as the Braves go to 5-3 on the year with the win and the Panthers even their record at 4-4 with the defeat.

A big thanks to Coach Stamm's Ludlow Girls Basketball team who gave a huge hand to us tonight with the pictures and video from the game.

Game 7 - Dayton @ Bellevue

We got this one in live as we pledged to you to do after last week's taped delayed game. Bellevue was looking for a couple of things in this game. a win on Homecoming night, a win as a birthday present for Coach Eckstein and to bring "the paddle" back to bellevue. All of those things happened as the Tigers advanced to 6-1 and hosting a playoff game with the 33-21 win over the Dayton Greendevils. Dayton came up with a couple of nice stops in the first half, but the greendevils started to fade in the second half and came up short. Next week we head south to Grant County as the Braves take on "Coach Stamm's" Ludlow Panthers.

Game 6 - Conner @ Dixie Heights

Another Tape Delay Broadcast as we bring you the Dixie Heights homecoming game between the colonels and the visiting Conner Cougars. We saw Conner in week 3 as they came back and defeated Simon Kenton at the buzzer. This game was a slugfest and with Dixie Heights having the bye week to prepare, they made the most of it with a 46-28 victory on Homecoming Night. Bad news for Conner as their QB Nick West went down in the second half with an ankle injury, and a couple of touchdowns that were called back due to penalty.

Game 5 - Boone County @ Cooper

We got back to live broadcasts on Friday as the Boone County Rebels looked to maintain their lead in the Class 6A standings with a win over the Cooper Jaguars. That's exactly what happened. It began with the initial kickoff that was returned 84 yards for the first score and then an interception on a Jaguar pass play quickly made it 14-0 inside the first 2 minutes. Boone County would score a total of 42 points in the first quarter on the way to a 65-7 victory over the host Jaguars.

Game 4 - Campbell County @ Ryle

No rain, but rather phone issues at the studio got this game on "Tape Delay" but regardless we got it in. Another District 6A matchup which after the first quarter was a defensive stand for both teams. Ryle would score in the 4th quarter on a 44 yard touchdown run from Kiefer Eubank with 5:35 to go. That gave Ryle a 13-7 lead after the missed extra point, but Campbell County could not capitalize on their last drive. 13-7 was the final.

Game 3 - Simon Kenton @ Conner

Rain threatened, but held off as this game was definately the "Game of the week". Phone problems at Conner prevented the game from being broadcast live, but we did air it on "tape delay".

The Pioneers seemed to have this one in the bag, leading 19-14 with a little over a minute to go, but with a muffed onside kick in the 4th quarter, the Conner Cougars were able to score and eventually take the 20-19 win on homecoming night.

Game 2 - Highlands @ Colerain

Our second game that started out with rain but at least no lightning that would delay anything. Adam Kiefaber broadcast his first game this week along with "The Coach" Aaron Stamm. They have a great chemistry together. I think you will enjoy their game calls.

Colerain came out smoking in the first half jumping out to a lead that they would never lose. It was 13-6 at the half, but the second half belonged to Colerain. Jumping out to the eventual 33-18 win after 48 minutes. Highlands will move into district play next week when they take on Holmes.

Game 1 - Walton-Verona vs. Scott @ Grant County

Our first game broadcast is in the books. With an hour delay for lightning, we finally get the game in. Scott dominated Walton-Verona from the first play from scrimage, but I know Coach McMillen will use this game as a learning tool for the Bearcats as they continue on the varsity level.

Congratulations to the Scott Eagles and first year coach Dave Campbell. The Eagles were able to get many players into the game and execute all facets of their game. Scott will use this game as well to prepare for their upcoming district schedule that starts in two weeks.
