Game 22 - 9th Region Finals - Holmes vs. Boone County

The Boone County Rebels have given the Holmes Bulldogs one of their two losses on the season. Holmes is looking to make it back to Rupp Arena for the 3rd time in a row and 4 times in 5 years. The entire game was a low scoring affair, Holmes took a 6-4 lead into the second quarter and a 14-12 lead into the locker room at the half. Holmes and Boone County's defense was tremendous tonight as the game remained tight going into the 4th quarter with Holmes taking a 3 point lead into the 4th quarter with the low score of 23-20. The second half saw Ricardo Johnson step up again as he has in both games that we have saw this tournament. Ricardo had 9 of his game leading 13 points in the second half and led the Bulldogs to a 32-29 victory and the 9th Region title. Boone County fell to 26-5 on the year with the loss. The rebels were led by Andrew Brown who stepped up again for the Rebels with 8 points. Holmes goes to 32-2 on the year and will face Christian County in the first round of the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Game 21 - 9th Region - Holmes vs. Newport Central Catholic

The Holmes Bulldogs are ranked #1 in Northern Kentucky but there is no faster rising team than the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds. NCC blew Highlands out of their gym in the District Tournament Finals and had been playing some really good ball. The game was close at the start as neither team could really get a run going. Holmes led 9-7 after the first quarter and 23-18 at the half. NCC came back out of the locker room to make it a tied game at 28 going into the 4th quarter, but Holmes proved to be just a bit too much for the 'Breds as the Bulldogs hitched their wagon to Ricardo Johnson as he led the Bulldogs to a 47-38 final score by adding 12 of his game leading 15 points in the final eight minutes. NCC was led by Matt Giesler and Grant Pangallo both with 11 points. NCC ends their season at 18-11 while Holmes advances to the 9th Region final with a record of 31-2 on the year.

Game 20 - 9th Region - Boone County vs. Highlands

Our first look at the Boone County Rebels this year comes at the 9th Region semifinals as they take on the 36th District Runner-up, the Highlands Bluebirds. On paper these teams match up very well. Boone County was defeated by Highlands earlier in the year. The game started out close as the 6-5 score took us to the second quarter with Boone County leading. Highlands came back to outscore the Rebels 15-10 in the second eight minutes to give the Bluebirds a 20-16 lead going into the locker room at halftime. Boone County came alive in the third quarter led by Georgetown recruit Steven McFarland's 6 points giving the Rebels a 33-32 lead going into the final quarter. We said at the beginning of the game that free throws down the stretch would be the difference, and that's exactly what needed to happen. The Rebels Andrew Brown took over the scoring in the 4th quarter adding 10 points and more importantly 6-6 from the free throw line to give the Rebels a 55-47 win over the Bluebirds. The Rebels went 12-13 from the line in the 4th quarter. Brown's 10 points added to his previous 8 to give him a game leading 18 points as Boone County goes to 26-4 on the year and advances to the 9th Region finals on Tuesday. Highlands was led in scoring by Stephen Kowolonek who added 12 points for the 21-9 Bluebirds.

Bishop Brossart would outscore Mason County in each quarter of the second half, but a bit too little too late as Mason County would take the last quarterfinal game by a 58-35 final score. Game 15 - 8th Region - Owen County vs. Grant County

It's the 47th year that the 8th Region Tournament has been held at Henry County High School. The first quarterfinal matchup puts two border county schools together as the Owen County Rebels, 31st District champs take on the 32nd District runner-up Grant County Braves. Each team has won a game against the other this year. The first half proved to be a tight contest as Owen County took a 22-16 lead into the locker room. The Rebels opened up the distance between themselves and the Braves to a 10 point lead outscoring Grant County 11-6 in the third quarter. Grant County wasn't done though. Kody Thompson, who had led the Braves in scoring all year opened up the Braves offense in the 4th quarter by erasing the 10 point lead and tying the ball game at 47 after regulation play had ended. Thompson had 9 of his game leading 19 points in the 4th quarter. In overtime, again a tight contest, but in the end, it was Owen County taking the 57-56 win over the Braves. The telling stat, was Owen County went 16/30 from the free throw line. This from a team that has shot for the season around 65%. Collin Gamble paced the Rebels with 16 points as they advance to the 8th Region semifinals on Monday night.

Game 14 - 36th District - Highlands vs. Newport Central Catholic

The storied history between Highlands and Newport Central Catholic goes back quite a ways. It seems like each year, it's these two teams battling it out for the District title. Newport Central Catholic took a 63-57 win earlier in the year from the Bluebirds. This time it's for the upper bracket in the 9th Region Tournament. Both teams were pretty evenly matched in the first half as Highlands took a 13-10 lead after the first quarter and a 27-25 lead into the locker room at the half. That's where the Highlands lead ended. Newport Central Catholic blew the doors of the gym off in the third quarter as the 'Breds outscored the Bluebirds 27-6 in the third quarter taking a 52-33 lead into the final quarter. NCC would continue to pound the Bluebirds in the 4th quarter and took a 76-54 victory and the 36th District title. NCC was paced by Jeramie conner who had 19 points, 17 of which came in the 2nd half. Stephen Kowolonek paced the Bluebirds with 18.

Game 13 - 31st District - Henry County vs. Carroll County

The Henry County Wildcats have been dubbed "The Luckiest Team in KY". They have this season won 12 of 21 games by 4 points or less. Would that continue?? Carroll County is playing on their own floor. Will the fans be that 6th Man to put the Panthers over the edge?? It did seem that way after the first quarter as the Panthers took a 13-8 lead. Henry County would hold the Panthers to just 5 points in the second quarter and took a 21-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. Carroll County cut the lead to 3 after the third quarter, but in the end, these two teams who have played each other so close all year long, would see the Henry County take a 1 point victory again at the hands of the Panthers. The final score, 43-42. Chris Hendrick had a real nice look with 7.1 seconds to go, but his shot was just off the mark as the clock hit 0:00. Casey Cable, who lit up the scoreboard in the first half paced the Panthers with 14 points while the Henry County big man, Cody Hinkle led the Wildcats with 13. Henry County will advance to the 31st district final and the 8th Region Tournament on their home floor next week.

Game 12 - 31st District - Gallatin County vs. Owen County

The Gallatin County Wildcats have been to the 8th Region Tournament for 3 years straight and look to make it 4. Owen County has also been to New Castle recently and look to continue toward Rupp. The game started out quickly and stayed close throughout. The game was tied at 15 after the first quarter and Gallatin County took a three point lead into the locker room on a three pointer by Travis Davis at the buzzer. Michael Colligan, one of Owen County's big guys was on the bench for most of the first half with foul trouble. The Wildcats opened up a 5 point lead going into the final quarter, but a 17-3 run by the Rebels began the end of the Wildcats recent dominance of the 31st District Title. During the second half, Trent Maddox, Gallatin's leading scorer rolled his ankle under the basket. This forced the rest of the Wildcats to take over Trent's scoring ability, but the scoring run by the Rebels proved to be too much as the Owen County Rebels advanced to the 31st District Finals and the 8th Region Tournament with a 53-44 victory over the Wildcats. Trent Maddox led all scorers for the Wildcats with 19 and Jordan Shelton paced the victorious Rebels with 15 points.

The Lloyd Memorial Juggernauts took a home win against the Dixie Heights Colonels earlier in the year. Dixie looked to add a win to the record and sending Lloyd home for the season as both teams looked to advance in the 34th Disitrict Tournament. Dixie Heights opened up a 10 point lead after the first quarter up 22-12 on balanced scoring by all of the Dixie starters. Lloyd Memorial would cut into the lead while still down 7 at the half, 30-23. The Juggernauts would cut into the lead even further being down just 4 points going into the final quarter as Dixie would only add 4 points in the 3rd frame. Randy Tackett, who was the catalyst in the Juggernaut victory in the earlier game, added 5 points in the 4th quarter, but it would not be enough as he was the only scorer for Lloyd Memorial in the final 8 minutes and Lloyd Memorial falls to Dixie Heights by a 40-37 final. Randy Tackett would lead all scorers with his 13 points as Lloyd Memorial falls to 11-15 on the year with the loss. Stephen Pompilio would lead the Colonel scoring with 10 points Dixie goes to 12-15 and continues in the 34th Ditrict finals againt the winner of St. Henry/Villa Madonna semifinal matchup on Wednesday Night.

Game 10 - 36th District - Newport vs. Dayton

The Dayton Greendevils have had a great season this year. With not one senior on the roster, Coach Dilts' team looked to advance against the favored Newport Wildcats. It looked like they would do just that. Dayton came out smokng and took the lead early and maintained it until 1:38 to go in the game when an Anthony Luther three pointer gave Newport their first lead. The game was tied at 58 with 8.1 seconds to go when Brandon Sizemore was fouled going to the hole. He sank both free throws to make it 60-58. That would be the eventual final score as the Newport Wildcats escape with the victory and advance in the 36th District Tournament. Shonn Bowden led all scorers with 20 for the Greendevils who go to 15-12 on the year. Newport had 4 players with double digit scoring, led by both Anthony Luther and Brandon Tucker with 15 points each. Newport goes to 16-10 on the year and will face Highlands in the second semi-final matchup in the 36th District Tournament.

The Beechwood Tigers came to Ludlow on the Panthers senior night to try to improve on an 18-4 record. The Panthers saluted their senior athletes and looked for a victory going into the district tournament. Unfortunately for Ludlow, Beechwood would take a 4-2 lead and not look back. The Tigers would take a 22-6 lead after the first quarter and a 35-15 leadinto the locker room at halftime. The Panthers saw the the deficit increase to 51-27 after three and a final score of 72-45. Beechwood did a great job of isolating Kyle Williamson who led the Panthers with 12 points in the game. Leading scorer for Beechwood was Brian Romes with 16. Nathan Snyder added 12 points for the Tigers who go to 19-4 on the season. Ludlow with the loss falls to 6-20 on the year. Both teams head into district tournament play next week.

Game 8 - Carroll County vs. Cooper

We came out to Cooper High School to see the first year Jaguars and Coach Sullivan take on a familiar foe to us, the Carroll County Panthers. The Panthers, under Coach Carroll Yager had already bested last years win total coming in with 9 victories compared to just 7 from last year. The Jaguars, who are a very young team come into the game looking for their second win of the season. Carroll County led throughout the game and had built a 9 point lead going into the 4th quarter, 31-22. Cooper came alive in the 4th quarter, mainly led by Dvontae Bradley who dropped 10 of his game high 18 points in the 4th quarter. The Jaguars rallied back to draw to within 2 points, but some key free throws by D.C. Craig with 8.3 seconds left game Carroll the 48-43 win over the Jaguars. Tyler Ramey added 9 points for the Jaguars, while Chris Hendrick led the Panthers with 17 points. Carroll County goes to 10-11 on the year while the Jaguars go to 1-18 with the defeat.

Game 7 - Bellevue vs. Villa Madonna

I love being a part of history making broadcasts. We didn't know it was going to be that way, but when Blake Bryan hit 21 points in the first quarter I knew something special was happening. Blake would end the game with a total of 48 points leading the way for the Villa Madonna Blue Lightning to take a 78-75 victory over the visiting Bellevue Tigers. Blake was presented with a game ball in pre-game ceremonies for hitting his 1,000 point in the game that the Blue lightning had over the weekend at St. Bernard. I'm sure another game ball will be in the offering after Monday night's game. David Schuh added 13 and Andrew McLean put in 10 points for the Blue Lightning. The Bellevue Tigers found themselves down by 12 points at one time, but fought back but could not overcome the deficit in time. Mike Young led the Tigers with 32 points himself. Chris Gregory added 9 points and Hunter Jones dropped 8 in the loss.

Game 6 - Conner vs. Holmes

The Holmes Bulldogs were given the distinction of the #1 team in Kentucky by Bluegrasspreps.com this week, but the Conner Cougars wanted to have a say in how long that distinction would last as they saw action in the 2nd Annual Lloyd Invitational Tournament tonight. Both teams fighting for the finals as they saw 32 minutes of semi-final action tonight. Holmes took an 11-6 lead after the first quarter but turnovers and frustration on behalf of the Bulldogs gave Conner an edge in the 2nd quarter giving the Cougars a 23-21 lead going into the second half. The third quarter ended on a half court three pointer by JaMel Riley to tie the game at 36, but in the end, Holmes pulled the game out by a 53-46 final over the Conner Cougars. Ricardo Johnson paced the Bulldogs with 20 points while Chris Lang led all scorers with 22 points. Grant County has started off the season 8-3 looking to go to 9-3. A far cry from 10-20 last year. but Holy Cross had other plans as they took on the Braves tonight in the 2nd Annual Lloyd Memorial Invitational Tournament. Holy Cross rode on the back of Shina Gwia who had 14 points in the first half and then on Keith Egan who added 11 in the 3rd quarter to give the Indians a 63-41 win over the Braves. The Indians who came into the game at 5-4 also got 15 points from Blake Trimpe who added 3 three pointers to add to the Indian cause. Games 3 & 4 - Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic

What a privledge to be a part of the 7th Annual Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic. It's very hard to believe that 7 years ago, this event was 4 teams in the Covington Catholic gym. Tri State Internet Sports will be a part of this event from here on out. What a great day of basketball. I want to thank everyone involved in making this event happen.

We have tried something new with these two games. We have shot video of the game and matched it up with our broadcast to bring you the entire game with our coverage. We'll continue to do this if we have the staff to man the camera and the audio archive. I think you will enjoy it. There is no other outlet that will go to this length to bring you everything you would want in High School Sports. Enjoy!!!!

It's always a big night when the defending State Champions come into your gym. Coach Chris O'Hearn and the Mason County royals came to Taylor Mill Friday night as the Royals continue their swing through the Northern Kentucky teams. Scott made it a game for 3 quarters, but the Royals pulled away on a great second half by Russ Middleton. Both Middleton and E.J. Murray for Scott both had 15 points to lead all scorers. Both teams will participate in the Bluegrass-Buckeye Classic at the Bank of Kentucky Center.

Game 1 - Gallatin County @ Simon Kenton

Personally, I thought this one would be a close one and it did not disappoint. A struggle until the end, but a missed three point opportunity for the Pioneers game a 57-55 victory to the visiting Gallatin County Wildcats. Trent Maddox led all scorers with 23 points, but poor shooting from the free throw line almost cost the Wildcats this one. Just 5-19 from the line for 26%. Not good.
Both teams are just getting started with the season. Don't be surprised to see both teams as the end of the year comes around in the post season at Henry County for the 8th Region Tournament.
